Mathern fightback keeps promotion bid on right track
TWO goals from Luke Farley, a "pearler" from Rory Prettyjohn and a Richard Wood goal gave Mathern a hard-earned three points at Race tonight (Tuesday).
The home side lived up to their name and raced into a two-goal lead but high-flying Mathern were not to be denied and the visitors clawed their way back into the match producing a second half performance which the club's East Gwent League team coach Colin Jeffery described as the best display he has seen for many years.
Midfield maestro Ieuan Diyaolu also paid tribute to his teammates.
"It was an amazing result," he told the club's website.
"It was a hard-fought battle from 2-0 down to win 4-2, Farley's double, Rory Prettyjohns with a 20-yard pearler and Richie Wood scored for us.
"It was a very hostile atmosphere, on and off the pitch so I'm really proud of all 13 brothers i played with today.
"We have to take it one game at a time but we are right in the mix for promotion and I have to give a big, big shout out to Alex Baijado who has come in as a young lad and done way more than hold his own."
An extra boost came with news that local rivals Thornwell beat Mathern's promotion rivals Pontnewydd 1-0.
Well Done to Garden City U18s who came back from a goal down to beat Caldicot Town U18s 6-1 with Ash Pearce scoring five of the goals and Matt Edwards converting a penalty after Billy Jeffery was brought down.
